On September 13, 2013, the son of Washtenaw County Undersheriff, Mark Ptaszek, died after the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee he was driving left the roadway on I94 about 2:20 a.m., struck a construction light generator, overturned several times and caught fire.
This was reported at the time by the Ann Arbor News [1].
The autopsy report released by the Washtenaw County Medical Examiner[2] shows that his blood alcohol level was 0.184 (legally under the influence 0.08 & legally “super drunk” 0.17). In addition, he had amphetamines and marijuana in his system[3]. The level of amphetamines was relatively low and, not knowing his medical history, could have been prescription medication.
The fact that he was the son of a long serving law enforcement officer is an indication that lack of knowledge of the dangers of drinking and driving is not the main factor in drunk driving. In some cases decisions are complicated by addiction and immaturity is often a factor in the decision to drink and drive. Every day 30 people die in drinking related automobile accidents [4].
Radio communications with central dispatch regarding the automobile accident [5].
