Former UM football wide receiver, Csont’e York was caught on surveillance video outside of Scorekeeper’s bar on July 18, sucker punching a young man into unconsciousness. According to the prosecutor the victim had to undergo surgery to repair his jaw, broken in three places and have his jaw wired shut.
Csont’e York stood before Judge Elizabeth Hines, and accepted guilt for aggravated assault on the victim and also misdemeanor assault by pushing the victim’s friend when he tried to help.
Judge Hines listened to Mr. York’s allocution of the events and agreed that there was a factual basis to accept his guilty plea. She agreed that he could be sentenced under the Michigan Holmes youthful offender trainee act but warned him that his sentence was likely to include some jail time. She suggested that she might sentence him to spend the same time in jail that his victim spent in the hospital (4 days). He will also have to pay the victim restitution for medical bills and related costs.
Coach Brady Hoke’s initial response during fall practice was that Mr. York was indefinitely suspended but was still part of the team
· Hoke said, at this point, Michigan is going to let the legal process play itself out before making any further ruling on York's status with the program.
· "There's no question (he's still a part of the program), we're going to go through the process," Hoke said. "He's a guy who has been a part of this team, and we're going to go through the process. [1]
About a week after the surveillance video was made public, someone at the University decided that Mr. York needed to be separated from the team.
