Sheriff Jerry Clayton, Derrick Jackson and Commander Dieter Heren attended a recent meeting of the deputies union, Police Officers Association of Michigan (POAM) to discuss the letter that Jackson sent to Judge Swartz [1]. The letter asked for leniency for Marquell Ganter, who was involved in a drive by shooting in August and who took a shot at deputies Ray Yee and Heather Morrison during a foot chase after the incident. In an interview with the Ann Arbor News, Sheriff Clayton defended Derrick Jackson and said that he had approved of the sending of the letter [2].
The meeting, reportedly, got very heated, with deputies expressing their anger at Jackson for his putting the welfare of the deputies. One of those officers, reportedly, took exception to Jackson’s letter to the department that had claimed he had apologized to Deputies Yee and Morrison. Jackson got upset and left the meeting early.
The meeting also touched on other issues related to the command staff. Deputies questioned why Brian Filipiak had not been disciplined after the incident at the Wayne County Airport where he had been drunk and belligerent. Dieter Heren was questioned about the surveillance video from Ypsilanti Township Hall, that reportedly showed him stealing $20 from a court employee’s car. Heren, reportedly, responded angrily saying “I am not a thief”
If anyone who attended the meeting made a recording, I would very much like to get a copy. You can contact me through the contact page (you can make up an anonymous gmail account if you want to remain anonymous) or you can call me at 734-369-3386 and we can make arrangements.
